What makes painting in Croatia so special? It’s the warm Mediterranean light, the turquoise sea, the sparkling waves, twisted trees and small villages. It’s the restaurants serving Dalmatian specialities, iced coffee and wine. We will spend time in one place, getting to know the landscapes through observation and visual exercises – and having time to explore with our sketchbooks.
Join Karen for this lovely Art Safari holiday, staying in one hotel for the whole week. There will be daily excursions to lovely places to paint.
Karen Pearson leads the group alongside your Croatian guide. Under the shade of a Mediterranean pine, in a national park or on the balmy terrasse of a cafe, she will run art workshops and demonstrations. One-to-one tuition is on hand when you’re sketching and painting on location. Watercolour works well for this Art Safari, though please use another medium if you prefer! You can keep your work in a sketchbook, full of ideas for future paintings, or bring loose paper to work on creating more completed pieces.
We spend time on the coast soaking up the colours of bourgainvillea and olive trees over painted houses and stone chapels. We visit islands and explore the ancient port of Zadar.
We also focus on Velebit National Park which spans along the mountain range overlooking the Adriatic. There’s wolves and bears in the high mountains (I don’t think you’ll see them!) but the whole area is a success story of wildlife regeneration and diversity. Our wildlife guide is happy to introduce you to the butterflies, the birds and the mosaic of diverse habitats and far-reaching vistas that await you. Velebit is scattered with ancient human settlements, with shepherds shelters and chapels perched on hillsides.
We will be staying on the coast at Starigrad, in a small family run hotel where we will be the only guests. We’re easy walking distance from swimming spots on the beach. Our accommodation is in simple but spacious en suite rooms and provides delicious meals. You can have a room of your own, or can ask us if you would like to share with another guest. There’s only 8 rooms so single rooms are limited to only four.
