Join artist and Malawi expert Mary-Anne Bartlett on an awesome Rift Valley painting tour. It’s dramatic, serene, beautiful and full of life. Painting here is a joy.
Mary-Anne first painted in Malawi in 1991 as expedition artist to ‘In Livingstone’s Footsteps’, also following the footsteps of her own great great grandfather. Regarded by many as a Malawian resident, she will introduce you to wonderful people and places, and show you the best of Malawi’s wildlife.
On this Art Safari, we traverse the southern section of the Great Rift Valley that includes Lake Malawi, the southernmost of Africa’s Great Lakes, and its outlet the mighty Shire River. The views and countryside we paint on this trip are glorious – from the deep blue waters of the Lake which occupies the valley floor, sweeping up to the purple hued rugged escarpments rising up to the central plateau, and descending again to the lush palm fringed Shire River flanked by grassy floodplains where game grazes contentedly.
Malawi is a small country packed with wonderful surprises. A fifth of the country is water – at 350 miles long, Lake Malawi is the 9th largest lake in the world. Its a beautiful, evocative place stay. It’s national parks and wilderness areas are unspoiled gems, teaming with wildlife for us to sketch. You can see some more unusual species here like the magnificent sable antelope, and thanks to huge conservation efforts black rhino, lion, cheetah and wild dog can be spotted too . . .
We will stay on Robinson-Crusoe like islands, snorkelling and swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi; sketch elephant, buffalo and lion on game drives in Liwonde National Park, and float down the Shire River on a boat safari painting hippos, crocodiles and a wonderful array of birds.
As we travel by boat and road, thatched villages punctuate the hillsides and laughter is a constant companion. It’s impossible not to smile in Malawi; the Malawians make it a very happy place to be painting!
Our itinerary will be spent in simple, comfortable camps set in idyllic and secluded, locations. A couple of the lodges are off the grid and lighting is provided by wonderfully atmospheric paraffin and solar lamps.
