An in depth drawing course with Claudia Myatt
Drawing is a skill that improves with practice, but it’s a bit like learning a musical instrument or a new language – there are techniques and tools to help you to become more fluent.
Join Claudia Myatt for an informative and enjoyable four week zoom course packed with information, demonstrations and projects that you can work on in your own time.
You can work alongside Claudia or you can watch so that you can re-play the recordings, pausing the recording if you want to as you complete each exercises and demos. Please note that these recordings will be watchable only via YouTube.
Each session lasts for an hour and 30 mins, with time for questions and interaction. If you are unable to be at the workshop on the day, we will send out the recording the following day or as soon as possible.
5 sessions, 6 – 7.30 pm
11 February 2025 Week 1 – Building Basic Skills
A pencil is an easy and familiar tool, so why is drawing so difficult for most of us? In this session we will take a close look at the process of drawing, with practical exercises that show how what you think you see can be very different to what you actually see!
– reasons to draw – why is it good for us
– observation and perception exercises to build confidence
– the language of line – creating our own visual alphabet
18th February 2025 Week 2 – Shapes and Shades
Effective drawing is about tone as well as line. In this session we look at the range of expressive marks that will improve our visual vocabulary
– choosing your tools – there’s more to the humble pencil than meets the eye!
– lines, edges and shading – a look at how we ‘read’ a drawing
– increasing our range of marks, adding new drawing tools
25th February 2025 Week 3 – The Technical Stuff Made Easier
Proportions, foreshortening and perspective – the three things hardest to get right. All can be sorted with a bit of knowledge and practical help; it all comes down to a shift in perception from three dimensions to two.
– measured drawing – an easy way to get core proportions right
– simple techniques to help with horizons, scale and distance
– the ‘picture plane’, negative spaces and other tools for drawing in perspective
4th March 2025 Week 4 – The Human Figure
Figure drawing is perceived as the most difficult subject of all to get right, but there’s no need to shy away from it. In this session we will look at common problems in figure drawing and how to overcome them, and some simple ways to gain the confidence to add people to your sketchbook wherever you are.
– a quick and easy way to get figure proportions right
– drawing figures (and anything else!) on the move
– heads and faces
– hands and feet
– figures in context
11th March 2025 Week 5 – Drawing Styles
Representational ‘accurate’ drawing is one of many options for the artist, but there are as many different drawing styles as there are people who draw. In this final session we open as many doors as possible into other ways of drawing, with examples from different artists, different cultures and traditions. Prepare for some fun!
We will send a materials list for each week with your booking confirmation, but if you’d prefer to work on the recordings in your own time then feel free simply to bring a notebook and pencil to the live session. Do get in touch if you need more information or advice about the materials to bring.
Claudia will prepare a summary of each lesson with tips and techniques to try – this will be sent out with the link to the recording.
