The last remaining great Himalayan Kingdom, Bhutan boasts magnificent mountain scenery, incredible architecture and colourful culture. A diverse natural Shangri-La, the country boasts of a staggering variety of landscapes, as well as an incredible array of flora and fauna. Set within one of the world’s most breathtaking mountain chains, Bhutan is famed for its high mountain peaks and range of trekking opportunities. Enigmatic and shrouded in myth, Bhutan is filled with tangible examples of its extraordinary culture, from the striking architecture of its mountain forts and monasteries to the images of Buddhist religious figures painted or carved onto the craggy cliffs. Colourful prayer flags flutter on spectacular mountain passes and prayer wheels turn slowly with the current of clear mountain streams.
We take artistic inspiration from some beautiful areas of Bhutan. We travel as artists, learning from the devout and fun-loving mountain people, taking note of the artistic influences and the points of interest through our sketchbooks and paintings. We will also learn about artist’s techniques; not only how to sketch quickly out in the field, but also how to translate sketches and photos into larger works of art. The amazing culture, chilli peppers, whiskey, yaks, buckwheat, the rich fabric of the traditional dress, its monasteries and dzongs are all there to inspire us.
Mary-Anne’s love of Bhutan is deeply in her core, and she will take you to paint up on the high passes and in the villages, monasteries and even at the iconic Tigers Nest. Bhutan is a country of prayer flags, history and culture, where the animal and spirit kingdom sit comfortably with the modern day.
Bhutan is a small Himalayan Kingdom where compassion is more important than capitalism, and well-being is measured alongside productivity in GNH (gross national happiness). We immerse ourselves in this deeply Buddhist land steeped in history, where traditional culture, myths and legends thrive.
Your tutor Mary-Anne Bartlett is an accomplished artist and seasoned traveller. She will teach you how to look at your surroundings and encourage you to fill your sketchbook pages in your own style, as well as trying some new ideas.
