Specialities
Sketching in watercolour, swifts, sky studies, watercolour landscapes.

Favourite destination
Very far north of Scotland, Norfolk, Somerset Levels but most of all I love my home county of North Yorkshire for the variety it offers for both landscapes and birds. Also my swift and house martin colony on our house in Gilling East!

Favourite medium
I never tire of painting in watercolour for its versatility and immediacy. I enjoy having to get brush strokes right first time, it really sharpens observation.

Sketching in watercolour from life as much as possible. Speciality, particularly sketching swifts. Each summer I spend countless hours sketching swifts in the sky and in the nest boxes using nest box cameras. I make many watercolour sky studies for swift compositions. Last winter I produced a very detailed watercolour project on the elusive hawfinches observed in Gilling East. I also specialise in painting landscapes in watercolour.

Jonathan trained at Bristol where he spent his final year sketching at WWT Slimbridge. He has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout the UK. He is author and illustrator of On Crescent Wings- a Portrait of the Swift. Recently he has been selected to exhibit at the SWLA exhibition at Mall Galleries in 2023-24 where in 2023 he won the Birdscapes Art for Conservation Award for use of his paintings for swift conservation and in 2024 he won the Michael Harding Watercolour Prize.

In June 2025 he is exhibiting at the Scottish Ornithologists Club gallery at Aberlady. Jonathan is an annual exhibitor in the Art Marquee at Global Birdfair.

He uses every opportunity to use his painting to help UK conservation projects, especially for swifts and house martins.
